"The Dangers of Walking Your Dog Near Bodies of Water with Alligators and Crocodiles"

As pet owners, we love taking our furry friends for walks and spending time in the great outdoors. However, we must always prioritize their safety, especially when walking around bodies of water that are home to alligators and crocodiles. The tragic incident involving Gloria Serge and her small dog in Fort Pierce, Florida in February 2023 is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers that can arise in these environments. Gloria Serge was walking her small dog near a retention pond when an alligator attacked and killed her.

Gloria's Dog Trooper

She tried to save her dog but was attacked and killed by the alligator. Her dog lived. This is a tragic example of the dangers that can occur when proper precautions are not taken. To ensure the safety of ourselves and our furry friends when walking near bodies of water that are home to alligators and crocodiles, here are some tips and suggestions:
  1. Keep your dog on a leash and close to you. This can help prevent your dog from wandering too close to the water's edge where they could become prey.

  2. Be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye out for any signs of alligator or crocodile activity. Look for ripples or bubbles in the water, mudslides, or banks that appear to have been disturbed or any unusual sounds.

  3. If you see an alligator or crocodile, do not approach or attempt to feed it. Keep a safe distance and slowly back away.

  4. Do not allow your dog to swim in bodies of water where alligators or crocodiles are present. Even if your dog is a strong swimmer, they are still vulnerable to attack.

  5. Avoid walking your dog near bodies of water during dawn and dusk when alligators and crocodiles are most active.

It is important to note that alligators and crocodiles are protected species in the United States, and it is illegal to harm or harass them. If you encounter an alligator or crocodile that you believe to be a threat, it is best to contact local authorities.

We understand that walking your dog is a fun and healthy activity, but it is essential to take the necessary precautions to keep ourselves and our furry friends safe. By following these tips and remaining vigilant, we can avoid dangerous situations and ensure the safety of our pets.
